November 13 - The World Is Flat
~20 copies at the Austin Public Library, but only a couple are available. You can always put one on hold and they'll notify you when it's available or let me know that you're waiting for my copy.
This book is a new edition of the Times columnist’s analysis of 21st-century economics and foreign policy. The library has the audio book (25 hours!) and copies of the original edition. MK's already read this one so I'm hoping she can lead the discussion : >
Place: Chateau Dev'reaux
Time: 7:30-9:30 (discussion starts no earlier than 8)
btw, the upcoming book list is still flexible, so feel free to contact me with your ideas for books. We've already made a couple of adjustments. Check out the list on Google docs.

October 16 - Predictably Irrational
~10 copies at the Austin Public Library, and I've got one I bought. You can always put one on hold and they'll notify you when it's available or let me know that you're waiting for my copy. : >
This book is about experiments in behavioral economics and might be a good distraction for some of the Wall Street wackiness these days. What I've read so far of the book I'd say it's quintessential social psychology, so I expect Brian to bring some good opinions to the table!

~3 copies at the Austin Public Library, and I've got one checked out. You can always put one on hold and they'll notify you when it's available or let me know that you're waiting for my copy. : >
This month's book follows the life of a remarkable woman from Kenya. If you haven't found inspiration yet this year, this might be the book that does it. Check out the reviews on Amazon.
On a personal note, my sister's in Wa, Ghana this month with a church mission. Sadly, I didn't know where Ghana was in relation to Kenya before this week. And for that matter, I had to look up Kenya, too. So I think this book should be good for me on an educational as well as inspirational level.

July 10 - In Defense of Food : An Eater's Manifesto
~20 copies at the Austin Public Library, but most checked out. You can always put one on hold and they'll notify you when it's available.
Check out the reviews on Amazon. The original Michael Pollan suggestion was his earlier book, but I already had a couple folks request this one instead so, voila! (Personal persuasion has a great effect on book club selection.)

Jim Cramer's Real Money - June 12
Jim Cramer's real money : sane investing in an insane world, by Jim Cramer
Check out synopsis and reviews on The Simple Dollar website. Even if you're not a huge money person (I mostly definitely am NOT), consider checking the book out anyways. I'm hoping the discussion between money-savvy people at the next book club meeting will be educational, even if I can't grasp most of the book. Also, we're curious to see if Brian thinks the book is as annoying as the T.V show, and whether Mary Kay really *is* nerdy enough to read this on the flight home from her honeymoon : >

Three Cups of Tea - May 15
Three Cups of Tea, by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin
"One man's mission to fight terrorism and build nations-- one school at a time"
Tons of copies at the Austin Public Library, but currently all are checked out. You can always put one on hold and they'll notify you when it's available.
Check out synopsis and reviews on Amazon. 875 reviews, most favorable (5 stars). But does that mean the likes of us will enjoy it too? You'll have to read it and see. : >
Place: Chateau Dev'reaux
Time: 7:30-9:30 (discussion starts no earlier than 8 : )
btw, the upcoming book list is still flexible, so feel free to contact me with your ideas for books. They should be ones that you are currently reading or would like to read. If you get one other person to commit to the book (I don't count b/c I'll read everything), your book gets next month's priority. That's right! Pretend this is reality t.v. and scheme your way to getting to pick June's book club book.
Don't forget to add books to lend in the google spreadsheet. Lots of good suggestions.

The Power of Now - April 17 Meeting
Some copies available at the Austin Public Library, including 1 electronic copy and a couple in Spanish
Check out synopsis and reviews on Amazon. There's quite a mixed bag! If this book is not your cup of tea, feel free to come to book club and gab anyway. Read as much as your "intestinal fortitude" can take, and bring your opinions on the book/topic/new age.
Place: Chateau Dev'reaux
Time: 7:30-9:30 (discussion starts no earlier than 8 : )
Some of you might be working on the Control of Nature. I started that also but had a special request to move this book up. That's right, special requests work! So feel free to still contact me with your ideas for books.
The rest of the list is in the google spreadsheet. Lots of good suggestions. Remember to check out the library page of the spreadsheet for other books that people are reading.

Spook - March 20 Meeting
8 copies available at Austin Public Library
Check out synopsis and reviews on Amazon.
Place: Chateau Dev'reaux
Time: 7-9 (discussion starts no earlier than 7:30 : )
It was tough coming up with a first book, so I took someone's suggestion of a random number generator, and tempered that with books that are readily available at the library and could be read in a short month. Spook came out on top!
The rest of the list is in the google spreadsheet. This was tough! Lots of good suggestions. Remember to check out the library page of the spreadsheet for other books that people are reading.

Calling all Chickendogs and Dragonrats!
So in keeping with that momentum, I'd like to start up a book club. (I know. Exciting, isn't it? : )
As a first pass, I'm going to suggest meeting on the second Thursday of each month starting at 7:30pm. I'll be happy to host each time, but we can also move the meetings around so folks can sharing the driving (and cleaning up).
I know it's hard to get a night when folks can meet up on a regular basis, and finding time to read is tough! So I thought we could put a synopsis of the books we read up on this blog and then folks could leave comments on what they thought about it. That way, if you have to miss a monthly meeting, you can still feel connected. We can also post the time and location in case they change.
First order of business we have to deal with is the fact that the second Thursday of February happens to be Valentine's day. This isn't a problem for me as hanging out with friends is a great way to spend the evening, but if folks want to move the first meeting to the first Thursday (Feb 7) that'd be alright with me. I don't imagine reading a book by then (I am a slow reader) but we can meet up and decide on books we want to read for future meetings.
Second order of business is deciding what books to read. I'd like to set the theme of this year's book club to "Inspiration." I'll let you all loosely define what that means (fiction, educational, non-fiction...), but basically, I don't want to feel crappy when I'm done reading the book. : >
Third order of business is to start working the Chickdog Dragonrat Library. Apparently some of you folks out there are over-achievers when it comes to the world of reading, and I don't want to hold you back. So, I've shared this spreadsheet where you can list the books you have or recommend to share. At meetings you can bring a book or two to share. In any case, books that you are willing loan out should be written up in the spreadsheet.
Action Items
Vote on first meeting date: February 7 or February 14 (leave comments or email me)
Research a couple of books you've been dying to read and add them to the google spreadsheet.
